LA Favorites

I had a request to do a post about some of my favorite places and things to do in Los Angeles. Here are just a few of my favorite places that I actually go to and you can find me at during the weekends. From food to workouts, this is just a small round-up of places you may not see on a regular travel guide to LA. If you are visiting LA for the second or third time, these are the kinds of places I would say to go to after you’ve done all of the regular touristy things!

I think I will also create a guide to a few of my favorite places to eat as well soon so watch out for that one! Let me know what you think and what you want to see next!

LA second-hand stores are AMAZING! Even if you go to crossroads or goodwill you are sure to find some name brands. For a genuine thrifty store, I like to go to SLOW Clothing on the corner of Melrose Avenue and Gardner Street. They have really cool prints and I always make a great find! The fair fax area of Melrose Avenue is a great place to get something unique and cool.

Lemonade is my go-to for a healthy meal on the go! I always try something different when I go, but I seem to end up with a side of their broccoli and cheese! This is a great place to get lunch between sightseeing, and the lemonade is of course amazing!

One thing that you must do is drive the PCH! You can take it to Malibu and I recommend doing this because the views of the ocean are amazing! I remember the very first time riding down the PCH with the windows down and the music loud. Definitely a memorable experience!

A fun thing to do when you have a few extra days is to go see a movie! The Melrose Rooftop Theatre is a fun place to see some older favorites accompanied by unlimited popcorn and a view of the sunset against the hills. Snuggle up in a super comfy bean bag chair and blanket and it is definitely a fun experience. Also, EP & LP is right down the stairs so you can make a bar stop right after!

One of my favorite beaches is definitely Matador Beach. The rocks are giant which makes for great shots! I would say that since it is a beach the cell service is horrible and the beach is a bit small so get there early for a good spot and good parking! It is a bit of a drive from LA as it is in the Malibu/Calabasas area, but definitely worth it!

I went to High Tide in the Arts District with a few friends and fell in love! The food was great and it was a great place to stop for drinks! I recommend going before the sun goes down because the outside area is completely pink and perfect for sweet photo ops! I definitely recommend getting a rose and an appetizer for a chill night out.

Want a work out that will leave you sore afterward? Check out, Psycho. Your first class is free so even if you are wanting a quick workout during a longer stay, this one is worth it! Everything is put together so well and it is really an effective HIIT class! They also have yoga sessions that are a great way to relax after a long day!

Bloggers Who Brunch Health and Wellness Event

Happy Memorial Day! This past weekend I went to my first Bloggers who Brunch event. It was such a fun experience as it was centered around health and wellness. I was able to take my very first class with the one and only Aubrie Winters! Aubrie is the cutest fitness influencer who teaches classes around LA and we were all able to do a mini dance cardio sesh with her!

I loved meeting her because she is so upbeat and so fun! She is such a people person and I loved her class. She teaches with a “never not moving” mentality and her music keeps you pushing through. Even though it was a 30-minute mini session, I was still sweating by the end!

There were some great sponsors such as Lavazza coffee, and Suja pressed juice. I also loved the yogurt bar that we were able to enjoy at the end of the workout! It was such a fun experience and I wanted to share a bit more of the LA events I attend on my blog! If you keep up with my Instagram story then you were able to see videos of the workout, of the yogurt bar and some snips of me actually working out!

Another great thing about the event was running into some of my other blogger friends! I went with Gina from Teenie Genie Styles (who I went to Coachella with), and I ran into a few other bloggers like Joy who is also a designer, and a few others from blogger meet ups! It really is cool when you get to see the community come together and enjoy a cool event like this!

If you are in the LA area I would definitely recommend taking a class from Aubrie Winters! Trust me, I definitely see myself taking more of her classes in my future! I mean look at her awesome bod, who wouldn’t want to take her classes?!

YSL Pop-Up

Coachella weekend one is known for all of the parties, pop-ups, and events to attend besides the festival itself. Brands from all over, big and small come to the desert to collaborate and create their own experience for their audience! There were many brands that I saw consistently throughout the weekend and of course the ones with the most creativity get the most mentions!

YSL had such a cool desert pop-up that we just had to visit! It had a beauty station in the desert with vintage looking gas pumps, cars, a small area of black hearts and more for the best photo ops. There were so many people there and I actually saw Manny MUA when we went. Not to mention that there was a YSL store to get a touch up from the hot desert day before getting in all the photos.

I saved this outfit especially for this pop-up because it was my least desert-y look and I wanted to shoot something fun. “Fun” is how I describe my looks when I wear something kind of out there or a statement piece that is different! I bought these glasses especially for this look and I knew they would complete the outfit since it tied in the white booties!

I commend the brands that are able to do big things like this because it gets so much recognition by the people that love the actual brand, and awareness to those who have not yet tried. There is something good to say about the brands that actually get creative like this and allow for the regular consumer to participate instead of just influencers. While everyone does love to see products recommended by their favorite celeb or influencer, when they really get to feel special too and take part in the event, that’s when a brand is doing it right!

My Favorite Hair Products

It’s been a while since I have shared a few of my favorite products on the blog! I always have my beauty wishlist tab that I update, but I wanted to do a post on the products that I actually use on my hair. I have tried a few different ones, and there are still ones I would love to try! I actually use these products and I wanted to share them in this post!

Also, how cute is this pink fire station?! I found it while searching for Marfa on my way home to Texas and I knew I had the perfect outfit for it! I actually thrifted this skirt from a downtown store in LA and it was only $20! I also have been wearing this shirt on repeat because I just love the color and there are so many ways to style it! For more outfit inspo on styling a graphic tee check out my latest blog post!

First off I took this picture for a Pantene contest to win free Coachella tickets but I wanted to do it because I actually do use Pantene! I usually use the shampoo for colored hair or the charcoal shampoo to keep my locks clean for days!

Also because my hair is colored I always use this conditioner to keep my ends soft.

For a much needed deep conditioning, I use this conditioner and leave it in for five minutes AT LEAST!

I also read that using heat protectant even without using heat helps your hair. I’m not sure if I trusted it but I use It’s A 10 which has heat protectant at least twice a week.

Batiste is my go-to dry shampoo! I have tried at least four and this is my favorite! I use the one for brunettes so my hair does not turn white.

About once a month (or when needed) I use this hair oil for a sleek look. I am very careful with hair oil since I usually like my hair clean and teased!

I use my wet brush every day and especially after I get out of the shower so my hair dries straight.

This texture spray is my go-to for big bold hair!

I actually used this beach spray for the messy wave! I love scrunching my hair with it and creating volume since my hair is so thin.

Should I do an updated hair care post?

Lash Lifts

I had a great response from everyone wanting to know more about Lash Lifts and my experience with them! I have had about three or four lash lifts now ever since I heard about it from my Little! I’ve had them done at two different places, one in Texas and one in LA and the process and everything was the same. ALSO, I am not a lash lift expert and do not know all of the terminologies and what goes into the chemicals used, however, I have had positive experiences with the process and wanted to share that with my readers!

I’ve heard it described as a lash perm! Really it is just a chemical put on your lashes that curls them and keeps them standing up instead of straight down. I have thin hair so obviously, my lash hairs are no different. I struggled with getting lash extensions for a while and was scared of the damage it did to your natural lashes. I was told the first time I went for a lash lift that extensions probably would not be best since my lashes were so thin and would struggle to hold up the extensions which would increase fall out. Also, I am so not ready for the upkeep of it!

I go once every four or five months and the lashes usually last about 6-8 weeks depending on how you take care of them. I buffer in a month or two for some down time to let my lashes have a break. I never see any breakage or anything out of the ordinary, I just like to be cautious.

Lash lifts are different from extensions!!! They are your natural lashes just curled upward so they look longer and like you just put on a single coat of mascara. Extensions tend to make your lashes fuller and more visible. Lifts make them longer and for some extra oomph, I like to just use a mascara with my bristles to separate them for a fuller look. Also, you save on mascara since you do not need to apply extra coats.

WHAT IS A LASH LIFT?
A lash lift is a non-invasive lash service that uses cream solutions to “lift” the eyelashes. Lash lifting is essentially a new age lash perm that uses cream-based products and silicone shields to curl eyelashes — eliminating the need for traditional lash curlers. Unlike old school lash perms, which use barrel rollers and give lashes an unnatural curl, lash lifts use silicone shields to lift the natural lashes upward, simultaneously giving height, length, and volume. Lash lifts often accompany lash tints (although a tint may be down on its own) and darken the lashes. When a lash lift and tint are used together, they replace the need for daily eyelash curlers and mascara.
ARE LASH LIFTS SAFE?
When provided by trained and experienced technicians, lash lifts are safe. Since they are cream-based products, they are easy to control and will not run into your eyes the way liquid solutions would. Always get your lash lifting service from a trained and certified lash lift technician.

How long it lasts : about 6-8 weeks

How much it costs : I would say anywhere from $70 – $100 depending on where you go. Mine usually cost $75

How long it takes : About an hour

Taking care of the lashes : No oils after getting this done! It can take away the product and make it not last as long. Carefully wash your face, I try to get my lash lifts with no makeup on and then go to sleep and not wash my face until the next day to really let the product set in even though you probably can use most cleansers. I am gentle around my eyes for a while to make the lift last as long as possible.

Don’t try if you are prone to eye problems!

Self-Health + Bloopers

Rolling in the New Year with a much-needed laugh! As a huge part of self-health, I think it’s important to laugh at yourself. Take the few bumps in the road and laugh at it just because you can. Here are a few of my unedited shots from my past shoots.

My face when people keep interrupting my shot

My favorite go-to face

*thinking about how I’m going to get through the rest of this shoot*

In all seriousness though, it is important to take some time for yourself. Eat your veggies, drink your water and handle your stuff. Put a face mask on or go for a long drive. Dance it out like on Grey’s Anatomy. Good ole’ retail therapy can give you a quick fix. Read a book that you actually enjoy, or a magazine you haven’t picked up in a while. Take a friend to lunch and dish it all out. Do whatever you need to do to release the stress and get it all out.

Like why am I holding my leg?!

Living in LA has been so amazing and challenging at the same time. I miss my group of friends and my support system. It has been such a growing experience from learning when your car needs a jump start and not knowing anyone that knows how to a first real job and getting scammed out of an apartment. Honestly, there have been times where I left work and just called my mom crying because I was so stressed and poor and not happy. But I think this is a really big rollercoaster because I have also had times where I cannot help but just thank God at the moment and when I look at a Malibu beach it’s hard to imagine anything could be more beautiful.

I could honestly have gone back at almost any time, and I would have gone back to not having to share a room, to my little pup, to eating out and hanging out with my friends and family and being happy the majority of the time. As I am writing this I am not sure why I didn’t honestly. I think I needed this period of time in my life though and I think I just let my pride get in the way and wanted to keep pushing through for reasons only God knows why. Actually… I think it’s because I always wanted to live here and I always wanted to get out of the San Antonio area and I felt like a failure if I went back. But I always knew I would go back, so at some point I would “fail”. I’m still not sure how I feel about the whole situation. I know one thing and that’s my style and taste, and adventure and possibilities will always belong here in Los Angeles, but my happiness and safety and home will be back home in Texas.

So what’s up with my legs? And that face??

Okay, rant over. I guess at the end of the day it’s all about your health and happiness. Always make sure the good outweighs the bad and when it doesn’t question its worth. This goes for people too, it sucks letting people go but it’s worst holding on to them sometimes. Do the things that make you happy and when you can’t reward yourself. Do your nails, take your time away from electronics, block out life and just take a good nap. Hope this helped a little! I’m probably saying things that are pretty obvious, but obviously, need to be heard.
