Fourth of July Ready with Wooden Ships

If you have been keeping up with my Instagram, you have probably seen my posts with this sweater from Wooden Ships! This pink star sweater is apart of their Fourth of July collection and I was excited to do a collaboration with this brand because of how soft and oversized their sweaters are (perfect for the beach) and because they are not fast fashion.

I have been to a few panels now where the speakers talk about fast fashion. While I am still learning and having a hard time straying away from this, I think it is a good discussion to be had and a movement in the right direction. Wooden ships believe in “lean production” which is a no waste approach. Ever knit is made to order and has a fast turn around time. Not only is this a breathable, comfy and adorable sweater, but it represents a brand with a purpose.

Besides not just being apart of ‘fast fashion’, Wooden Ships also prides itself on giving back to numerous environmental programs, providing ethical production, and reducing their carbon footprint at their offices in Bali. They also use simple packaging with eco-friendly oxo-degradable plastic bags to minimize plastic use. (Did you know 30% of all garbage is packing waste?!)

So not only are you getting a sweet sweater, but also supporting a great business and a greater good.

So on to the sweater itself. When I decided to do the collab I decided that it would be best to shoot it at the beach since this is probably where I am going to spend my fourth of July. I opted out of the ‘red, white and blue’ theme this year as I think it’s overdone to death (especially by me) and went with a more realistic look. Plus this pink really complimented my feed so it was a win-win!

The best way to describe the knit is oversized and slouchy as a perfect loungewear top or cover up. Also, it is very thin and breathable but perfect for a cool beach day! Like I said, truly the best beach sweater!

And did I mention all sweaters ship free? What is your favorite part when you buy an online item?

The Bodysuit Post

I wanted to dedicate this post to those special one pieces you have hanging in your closet. You know, the ones that get you fully undressed when you have to use the bathroom (unless they have the buttons on the bottom in which case you feel like a 5-month-old). Yes, the bodysuit. There are also good parts to this clothing piece! The ease of slipping one on and adding a simple pair of jeans and sneaks like how I styled them. When your outfit looks put together you’re halfway there, amiright?!

I purchased this bright one-piece from Zara, and I loved how soft it was I actually bought two! The bright colors are perfect for Summer and they were only $20!

Bodysuits come in all shapes and sizes. From off the shoulders to turtle neck tanks, they also flatter all shapes and sizes! Since they give the illusion of being tucked into your bottom clothing piece, that can help cinch in your waist and really show off your figure. Getting the right size is, of course, crucial because you do not want them too tight (or it will be up your you-know-what) and if it is too big you can be left with too much extra fabric. I wanted to share a few others that are also relatively inexpensive so that you could go purchase them as well.

I actually wore this one piece as a swimsuit since the color is so bright and the material is so similar! There are no bottom buttons or anything that signal that the one piece wasn’t for the beach so I went for it!

How My Style Has Evolved

I think as we grow, so does our taste in clothes, along with other aspects of course! I was talking to another blogger recently and I realized that what I post on the blog and Instagram isn’t always pieces that I would wear on a day to day basis. Along with mixing in my favorite statement pieces, I also am going to try to incorporate posts that embody what my regular style is as well. I usually wear my same 501 Levi’s jeans with a (most likely white) v-neck, some simple gold pieces and my hair down. So except for the heels, this outfit is not too much out of my usual look, except for the heels.

I really do think influencers have had a big impact on what I wear! I usually try to limit the trendy pieces because I try to think… will I wear that other than for a shoot? And some pieces I post are just too fun for me to pass up like my star shorts!

When I first started off blogging I have to admit I was aiming to dress like the lifestyle bloggers who constantly shop at Nordstrom and tend to be southern. I quickly realized that while they had cute pieces, they were all so similar! Something amazed me by the bloggers that had an edgier, cooler style with posts that had cool angles and cool pieces. Now I am somewhere in between trying to post outfits like them for cool inspiration, and everyday minimal pieces. While the contrast of the two sucks for my Instagram feed, I feel it is better to be relatable to my audience, but at the same time keep them interested.

No matter what the look may be, my goal is to be different, but also genuine with my style. I have slowly learned more about what I like and do not like and that takes time. I find pieces even now from forever ago that I truly still love, and ones that are cringe-worthy! I would not be caught dead in a lace forever 21 mini dress anymore. But I do love the forever 21 sneakers that I can’t live without!

Where I Shop

I always get asked about new boutiques and places to shop so I thought I would compile a quick list of places where I get my favorite pieces. I really do shop around everywhere, but depending on the piece I want I will go to different places. If I have a piece in mind, I will go to different places to see if they have something similar, or if it is trendy I have my go-to places! Also if I do not have any idea of what to shoot and just want to try to find a brand new piece I also have my go-to places to shop as well!

I usually like to online shop because the sites I visit most often are not usually found at my local mall. Some of them of course are, but I also just think it’s so much easier! I hardly go to the mall to shop unless I know the store has a piece I really want so I go and see it and try it on in person. I have gotten pretty good at focusing in on materials, reading size dimensions and concluding what will work for me and what will not based on the information provided when I online shop.

I actually got this outfit half online half in person. I was looking for last minute Festival Style pieces and festival or not I am a sucker for fringe. This dress is actually from Forever 21 which is where I go to get my trendy pieces. When I am looking for a piece that is fun and lower cost, or pieces that I really like because they are trendy but I may not wear in a few months, Forever 21 is my go-to! That being said, I would consider this dress a staple dress because it is a LBD and I know I will be wearing it for a while!

Showpo is a great place to shop for cute pieces no matter your size! The pieces always fit well and are girly and fun! Definitely, a must when you are just shopping around for weekend wear!

Verge Girl and Princess Polly seem to be on the same wavelength. I am OBSESSED with their pieces and this is where I shop when I want to shoot something new but I do not have a piece in mind. The pieces are always feminine and sweet and so my style!

The ‘sweet girls’ boutique is none other than Lulu’s of course! This is a must for a sweet Sunday dress or a cute vacation outfit! Also, their shoes and accessories are mostly why I shop here!

When I am looking for something cool and fresh, I shop Asos. The prices range but when you really spend some time on the site there are tons and tons of great finds! For petite friends like me (or even my tall gals) there are subsections for you to shop your size too!

Higher End

Give me all the Lace, Frills and sweet prints brought to you by For Love & Lemons! These pieces are more special occasion pieces but they are so fun and ideal for when I am shooting!

Reformation has great basics and vintage vibes. I found a jacket there once that I just will never be able to live without!

Now I know everyone knows about this one, but for a sleek look, I shop Revolve. You really just need a piece or two to create a killer look, but I mean I would also be elated if my entire closet was made up of Revolve! (What a dream)

The Good and Bad about being a Girl

I never was really into the feminism movement. I am all about girls supporting girls and equality, but the movement was a little too much for me. I think it was a great cause but also a bit unnecessary to me. Until recently at least…

I have been thinking a lot about how unfair it is that women cannot dress a certain way without being gawked at. Okay yes so wearing lingerie in public on a cold day with thigh highs will obviously turn heads, but wearing some tight shorts on a cold day and an oversized jacket does not mean you are asking for anything. In all honesty, I even felt a bit uncomfortable, and frankly unsafe, wearing just this bodysuit and jeans when I went into a gas station around town. I think that is so not fair and not okay. While yes sometimes I do dress a bit out there, that should be my choice.

One of the many blessings about being a girl is dressing in multiple ways, and I take full advantage of that. Going from dressing like a tomboy to head to toe pink, or a skin-tight dress that may be a bit too thin is something that guys do not really get to do! So I love the options and I want to play with them, especially because of the blog! However, sometimes this gets the wrong attention and it really isn’t fair in my opinion.

Before we teach girls how to dress we should teach boys how to act.

I am definitely not saying that girls should be showing everything off whenever they want, there are still some things that need to be kept in order and not proper. But sometimes I think it is okay to be risky or take a cool photo or just wear something because you want to. I did not think that before but now I really do think so! Girls should know there are limits of course, but at the same time, there is a time and a place for everything.

The sucky part is having to tone down a look because it would make you feel uncomfortable even though it is what you want to wear. I think it’s such a blessing to be a pretty girl, but also so hard because when guys do not accept the word ‘no’ is where it gets dangerous. That is something that is not going to change in a day and now I think the whole feminism movement is on point… well at least the aspect that has to deal with what I am talking about.

What do you think about this issue?

Coffee Talk : Spring Style

I always get excited for the upcoming season at the end of the current one. It’s a cycle being excited to wear different clothes and then getting bored of them and waiting to transition your style. Also, I hate that small window between trends that happens every once in a while. I was shopping for a new piece to shoot this past weekend and I SWEAR I went to at least 10 stores both online and in-store and I could find nothing that spoke to me! So I am thinking that 1. I could definitely be a trend follower (which I admit I am) and 2. I am not the kind of person that just seeks trends but I seek unique pieces. There have been several pieces that I really love and wanted to shoot but they were just too much! I do not want to spend $400-500 on a piece that I will wear a few times but I want it just to shoot. (Jeans and staple pieces are a different story and you have to splurge sometimes tbh) And besides that my readers do not seem to be huge spenders. I feel they are like me and sometimes you buy the piece because you fall in love with it! Buying a piece to shoot once is different than buying a piece I really like and will wear again.

So, here is my “hoping for the California sun to come back out and stay out” outfit preparing for Spring!

A few pieces I cannot wait to see this season :

Skirts : A no brainer but Midi, flowy, and bright I love them all! I want to not just wear the regular mini skirt but something with fun details that can be paired with a sweater or a tank.

Statement pieces : As I said in a previous post, I think bold pieces are going to be a trend and filter down from the designers like Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood. And trust me I am here for it! After that H&M x Moschino Collab I believe anything is possible!

Pastel Neutral pieces : I love a good pastel pink, light green and baby blue! I can already picture shots in fields with bright colors in my hair, in the air and black boots on my feet!

I have been wearing it in every other post and for good reason! It looks good with everything and is simple and easy to throw on since it’s so comfortable! When you find a piece that you love so much, it’s hard not to want to wear it all of the time! I definitely love Free People and their pieces are always one of a kind!
