Interview with Teenie Genie + Outfit Details

I was so lucky to have been able to go with Gina (Teenie Genie) to Palm Springs for the Coachella events this year! She has gone the past four years and since this was my first time it helped so much to have someone who knew their way around. I met Gina at a blogger meet up in LA and I was so excited to go with her. It’s so much easier to go with other bloggers because they understand the need to stop for pictures or when you want to take a fun story for your Instagram. Not only did we go to lots of fun events, but we also got some great shoots in.

I have not done a blogger interview in a while and I wanted to continue that series! I also added lots of outfit shots and pieces to this post because I just could not resist!

What made you start a blog?

It was about a year ago where I found myself bored in my personal life. I spent a lot of time on Instagram having fashion blogger envy, wishing I could do something like that. I was at a networking event with a group of pretty-high level marketing executives talking about the marketing strategy I had taken at my company, and the programs I had implemented in my short six months there, “You built a website by yourself?” “How did you generate that many leads in one month?” “What’s that platform you used?” “Wow, you are so creative.”

It was at that moment, the floodgates opened. I realized I knew a lot. My positions at startups had helped me cultivate a unique skill set that many people didn’t have. Was I creative?

These conversations ultimately gave me the confidence to start my blog. I desperately wanted to explore fashion, but I didn’t want to leave my job, and I didn’t want to work for someone else. I knew I wanted to do something with petite fashion since I was experienced and it was something I could help others like me with. My nickname in college was Teenie Genie and it was my Instagram name so I chose the name TeenieGenie Style. If these girls could do it, why couldn’t I? There was nothing stopping me. Nothing to lose. I dove in head first and haven’t stopped swimming since.

What is your favorite part about blogging?

Connecting with my followers and other bloggers! I love to write, but sometimes it can be really hard to buckle down and get into a creative zone. A lot of time, I’ll stay up all night writing. I put a lot of effort into my posts and try to make my content meaningful for my followers.   I absolutely love it when I get comments that my readers found something relatable, helpful, or inspiring.  It’s what motivates me to push forward and continue blogging.

Which post was your favorite to shoot?

My tie-dye post!  I do a lot of research into where I am going to shoot.  It’s easiest for me to shoot in my home town because grew up there and know it like the back of my hand.  I remembered I did this biology project in 9th grade and had discovered these really cool beach caves.  I thought it could be a cool place to shoot, and it ended up being amazing! I feel like the shot of me in the pink dress looks like I’m off in some far off foreign place, but really I’m just about a mile down the road from where I grew up.  In fact, the other outfit I shot for that post was taken only 500 feet away from the cave picture!  It’s amazing how when you can utilize your surroundings to produce such different effects.

What is your favorite piece in your closet?

That’s a tough one! I have a denim jean jacket with stars on it from Pistola that is one of my favorite go-to pieces.  I think of my style as “California Cool” and I think it’s piece totally embodies that.  A basic jean jacket with a little bit of edge that looks effortless.  That’s what I try to achieve with my style.  I wear it all the time in the Summer at night when it gets chilly in Santa Monica.

Can you share your go-to fitness tip?

Challenge yourself, but enjoy yourself at the same time! I used to push myself to do HIIT classes, but would feel like I was going to throw up the entire class because it was so hard.  At the end I would just be happy it was over and I wasn’t suffering anymore! If you hate your workout, chances are you will eventually give up. Instead, find a workout that you enjoy.   I love barre and pilates so those are my core workout classes.  Each class I challenge myself to go a bit further or harder.   That’s what makes it rewarding and has me coming back!

What I learned from Festival Season

This past weekend was one crazy weekend! Since it was my first brush with Coachella I was so glad I was able to attend with Gina since she has gone the past four years. While there are so many things to learn still, of course, I wanted to just state a few of the things that stuck out to me the most!

Time : I would recommend not having a strict schedule! Everything is so far apart and walking can take a long time as well! Go with the flow, and for things you really want to be at, plan ahead!

Plan your looks ahead of time : You do not want to worry about what you will be looking like when you are there, you just want to get to the fun! Try on your looks before you leave and write down what accessories go with each look so that you can just change and go!

Bring a jacket for the night time : If you plan to be at Coachella all day into the night you will want a jacket! The winds can get pretty chilly especially if you are having to walk back to your car or Uber

Uber : This one kind of goes with the time one. Ubers can be hard to locate at times and the reception was spotty at one point so give yourself some extra time for this one!

Go with a group : I had so much fun with Gina, and I am so glad it was us two! Most people were in groups and that just seemed like so much fun to me too! All I would say with this one though is to make sure you stick with a person, it can get pretty crazy and confusing there if it’s your first time like me!

This look was the most Coachella look I had! I loved it and wore it all day this day! I had a braid in my hair with gold rings, a fringe skirt, and gold jewelry and I loved it! I got so many compliments on this look as well, and I was able to stay in it without feeling uncomfortable since it was considerably comfy!

Get the Look

So if it hasn’t become apparent enough, I am stepping out of my fashion comfort zone and I haven’t stopped. Along with trying more boho looks, I have shot a few trendy and chic looks as well which is really killing my Instagram profile! But I like being able to pull off new looks and trying something that is different! Honestly, I know a lot of you are going to HATE this look as soon as it comes out on Instagram but I had to try it out! I was getting creative with the outfits I have and I wanted to share something new and different. Plus I am still in my phase of doing different kinds of looks so this one was included. These shoes are actually my moms and probably a size too big and I bought this romper from Wildfox at a sample sale! I tried again with the Spring outfit and black boots (similar post) and this is what I got. I also linked a few outfits to show you my inspiration and pieces to shop for yourself!

What do you think of this look?

Valentine’s day Gift Guide + Outfit Details

Valentine’s day is one of my favorite holidays! It always has been ever since I was younger and would get to pick out Valentine’s cards to give out to the class! I even would buy Valentine’s for my friends in high school. I love the pinks, reds, and purples. Hearts and the odds and ends that come with the holiday are always so cute! I also really liked shooting this outfit! Something different for me as I am trying to be more trendy with this, but I love trying new looks and genres of fashion. I also included some sweet gifts for the special girls in your life! These are sweet little reminders to share that will last a bit longer than a heart balloon and candy!

Dressing Room Diaries : Free People

I have always loved Free People and since I have a newfound love for boho, I had to do a try-on at the store! A few of these pieces may not be as accessible since I found some on the sales racks. But here is a short haul with a few of my newest favorites at the store right now!

Let me know if you think I should do more of these dressing room try-ons/hauls. I also did another try-on at the LA thrift store Wasteland. I actually really like doing them because I get to show off new pieces that I enjoyed but that did not exactly make it to the blog.. and a few that did!

Is there a store that you would like to see me to go check out around the LA area?

Let’s start off with this crop top! So comfy and I really like wearing small tops because I am young and I still can! It’s like a mini skirt.. You won’t always be able to wear them so do it while you can! I would definitely wear this at home or a quick trip just hanging out.

These jeans are soooo comfy! I actually will probably be buying these eventually because they are so soft and allow you to move! Plus I really like the button up details. My only thing was I don’t like that much distressing. But these were a size 24 and they still were a comfy fit!

This furry black crop top was so incredibly soft! It was very small and I thought it was so cute! I would wear it for a night out with some black jeans or a high waisted skirt! This was the last one on the sale rack so I’m linking a similar top.

This top was a huge trend a few seasons ago. I love the lace detailing and it is so easy to throw on and wear by itself or under another piece. Also, it came in a few different colors.

I tried on this brami because it looked so soft. Soft and comfy seem to be the words I keep using but it really is true! All of the pieces are so easy to wear! Obviously, I would not just wear this top out but it is a great piece for at home or under a top.

This jacket has been on my wishlist for a while now! I just think it looks so cool and can spruce up a plan jean and tee look and take it to the next level! Now that it is on sale it is a must to get!

I saw this set on the sale rack and I had to try it! It gave me Coachella vibes from two years ago. Such a fun look and the skirt is so fun and fits so well. I usually do not like this scrunchy material for some reason.. looks kind of *cough cough* cheap to me, but you cannot really see it because of the bold print so I am all for it!

California Update + Outfit Details

I have come to realize that not many people know what I am doing up here in California since I moved back after the holidays. Everything is kinda rocky but that is due to me figuring out exactly what I want to do with my life. I know I want to try to pursue PR since that is what I majored in and I want to stretch out my time here in Los Angeles, but I also am not sure if I want to stay here for a long time. I think it really depends on if I find a job I really enjoy. I know work is work, but I do not see the point of working somewhere I do not love and being away from my friends and family for no reason. Yes, the opportunities are a bit better here in Los Angeles blog-wise, but I’m not sure if the pros outweigh the cons quite yet.

What I do know for sure is I will be staying here until the end of March. I have two internships right now that I really wanted because they are giving me experience in positions I have never had before and I am excited for the growth in their fields. The first one is at a PR showroom which is a totally different type of PR than what I have been doing at previous internships! I really like working with fashion and name brands so I definitely wanted hands-on experience with this. Also, I feel like I could not apply for a job at a PR showroom without experience and now I have that!

The second internship is with a high-end magazine! I was not too sure about this position at first but the more I heard about it the more interested I became. It was described to me as “reverse PR” where the agencies come to you and you reach out to them for their clients to be featured. Not only am I doing this but I also get to experience putting together the magazine and all of the segments that go with it! Such a cool experience to have! More updates soon to come on both internships!

Okay on to the look! I have had this skirt now for a few months and have yet to style it! I finally figured I would keep it simple and a bit chic. I love playing around with my style and wearing pieces that are different and bold. This lace up skirt has the best details that are simple but stand out. Just my style! This is perfect for going out and wearing with a black bodysuit!

Coffee Talk : Spring Style

I always get excited for the upcoming season at the end of the current one. It’s a cycle being excited to wear different clothes and then getting bored of them and waiting to transition your style. Also, I hate that small window between trends that happens every once in a while. I was shopping for a new piece to shoot this past weekend and I SWEAR I went to at least 10 stores both online and in-store and I could find nothing that spoke to me! So I am thinking that 1. I could definitely be a trend follower (which I admit I am) and 2. I am not the kind of person that just seeks trends but I seek unique pieces. There have been several pieces that I really love and wanted to shoot but they were just too much! I do not want to spend $400-500 on a piece that I will wear a few times but I want it just to shoot. (Jeans and staple pieces are a different story and you have to splurge sometimes tbh) And besides that my readers do not seem to be huge spenders. I feel they are like me and sometimes you buy the piece because you fall in love with it! Buying a piece to shoot once is different than buying a piece I really like and will wear again.

So, here is my “hoping for the California sun to come back out and stay out” outfit preparing for Spring!

A few pieces I cannot wait to see this season :

Skirts : A no brainer but Midi, flowy, and bright I love them all! I want to not just wear the regular mini skirt but something with fun details that can be paired with a sweater or a tank.

Statement pieces : As I said in a previous post, I think bold pieces are going to be a trend and filter down from the designers like Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood. And trust me I am here for it! After that H&M x Moschino Collab I believe anything is possible!

Pastel Neutral pieces : I love a good pastel pink, light green and baby blue! I can already picture shots in fields with bright colors in my hair, in the air and black boots on my feet!

What is your favorite piece to wear during Spring? Got any Spring Style predictions? Share them with me in the comments!
