Moving to LA

I get questions from people all the time who want to move to LA. I also get compliments on actually moving out here. What people do not get is that it is not easy to pick up your life and just up and move. And on top of that, it’s not just the newness of a different city or being away from family and friends. For people who really want to move somewhere else you need to think about having extra money. Money for when your days don’t go right and you want to buy food, or when your sick and need to see a doctor, or when your tight budget does not align right. If you are on a tight budget don’t even think about moving to LA unless you have extra back up cash totaling at least $3,000 because life happens y’all.

My rant is not even close to over. So feel free to scroll through the pretty pictures, leave a cute comment and be on your way because I’m still typing away guys.

Say you have a dream of moving somewhere like New York or LA. It’s sooo hard if you do not have the proper support behind you. No, I’m not talking about good wishes from your dear family and closest friends. I’m talking about cash and a reliable car and a place to live. Know that if you live here you have to have a place to stay. And to have a place to stay you probably need a job. And to get a job you also need a place to stay nearby to be able to go for interviews. Are you seeing what I’m getting at? Its a vicious cycle of both needing each other and that hardly ever happens at the same time.

People do not realize that for the most part, I am all alone. I don’t have family here or real friends. I am slowly getting there luckily because I blog and can reach out to girls. But let me tell you it takes time to make friends when you don’t have common interests with girls especially ones that already have a friend group.

And if you are an introvert FORGET IT. Good luck because it will take you even longer. But I am guessing if you are an introvert you aren’t even keen on moving somewhere new by yourself anyway.

I feel like people think that moving to a new city, especially to pursue your “dream” is a lot like the movie Coyote Ugly. She has a hard time in the beginning and even goes as far as being robbed. But in the next few hours, she finds the coolest job, meets a super cool guy and gets to sing all she wants. EHHHHHH wrong. Yes, I’m sure every once in a while it happens but hate to burst your bubble but ups and downs come and go daily.

Now all of this to say I just want to be realistic to the people who tell me they are “thinking about moving” to LA or anywhere really. I’m not saying don’t do it. I’m saying think it all the way through. Because life isn’t la-la land. Your car will break down and you won’t have anyone to help tow it (happened to me), something bad will happen and your parents will have to fly out to help you (happened to me) and you’ll have a terrible day where you run out of money or you just get too homesick. How are you going to get your car to your new city? What is it like paying taxes for the new job you hope to get because you probably haven’t even gotten it yet. Will you have money to come home for holidays because your savings could be gone in an instant if you get sick or hurt.

I’m not trying to be pessimistic, I just think this was a blog post that needed to be said since everyone undercuts how difficult it can be. Okay, rant over. *drops mic*

Friday Faves

It’s time for another quick round-up of my favorites! Just another mini blog post full of random items and tidbits I do every once in a while. So let’s get started!

For an everyday natural look, I use my Glossier boy brow in black. I wear this to work EVERY DAY. Such an easy way to get darker, natural looking eyebrows that stay in place. If you want a few more beauty product recommendations, check out my wishlist – beauty tab!

The LA Blogging Community

If I am being honest, my whole reason for really wanting to be here in LA has to do with my blog. While I am 50% here for work, 50% really is interested in what being here can do for expanding my blog. If I did not have this, LA would just be another cool place to visit. While I hope to rise in my career in Fashion PR, that idea actually came after my move. I came to LA knowing no one. Luckily one of my sorority sisters joined me for the summer, and I had a few acquaintances along the way. But slowly, the friends I have made have even come from blogging.

Not only do these girls get what it’s like to have to come up with new creative ideas and shoot them, but they are so supportive! I have not met one of these girls in real life and got the vibe that they are more about the competition than friendship. They have all been so sweet and willing to meet up and not just shoot, but really get to know each other.

In comes LA Social hour. I met some of the girls that formed LA social hour at a previous LA blogger meet up. Now, the group puts together small events to socialize, learn and grow your blogging community. They conduct panels and social outings and each of the girls that formed the group is so genuine and inclusive when it comes to every person that comes to the events.

I have been so lucky to become apart of this niche, and I hope to continue to grow my friendship and connections with these amazing girls! This community has truly made being somewhere new and living so far away easier than I would have ever expected. I was talking to a friend back home and she commented on how it looks like so much fun and that I am finding new friends. While it did take a bit, this really has been such a great experience for me and the networking is always great as well!

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

This is something that I really struggle with in some areas, and really shine in some. When it comes to dealing with life changes, like leaving college and ending relationships, I have a really hard time. I think I have a hard time when I am forced out of my comfort zone rather than when I choose to leave it. But that is just an everyone thing. I think I usually need to just build up my mentality to change things first. Something to work on for the things I can’t change…food for thought.

What I really wanted to talk about was the part that I shine in, because maybe someone reading may have a harder time with that part and need the little encouragement it takes to push through with some of the small stuff. Being mostly alone in Los Angeles has taught me independence. I do not really have anyone to rely on and that’s okay because not only did I choose this, but I am lucky enough to have support back home. That being said I think it is hard for some people to 1. live alone in a new city and 2. leave the apartment and go to events and things like that alone. I know a few girls that have expressed this to me and I wanted to leave some tips.

A great brand once said, “Just Do It.” Sometimes you just have to psych yourself out and force yourself. Honestly, I picture it like taking a bath as a little kid. You do not want to go to a new event or meet up with a bumble bff match, but when you’re there you’re happy you went. Even if it wasn’t super perfect, you accomplished going!

Start small. I am outgoing and very talkative so I start off by giving a girl I think looks nice a compliment. Then I ask where they are from or why they are there. If they are meeting with someone I tell them how I am there alone. Get a feel for the conversation and above all, do not be afraid to just hang out alone! We’re old enough that no one should judge you anymore!

Also stepping out of your fashion comfort zone is a must! Once you got your style nailed down you definitely need to be able to play dress up once in a while! This tee was a little out of my regular buys but I thought it looked cool. I decided my style is comprised of pieces I like and that is basically what unites them all!

Where I Get My Trendy Pieces

This was actually a requested blog post which surprised me so I have to give the people what they want! I talk a lot about trends I feel. I have gone on and on in blog posts about trends so I will try not to bore you with those details! (If you do want some of the gushy details, go to this blog post). I have touched on this subject a bit in this blog post in case you want to check out more in-depth on the types of places I have shopped!

One thing that usually goes hand in hand with trends tends to be fast fashion. I actually am not really a fan of fast fashion for several reasons. 1. It is usually not sustainable or good for our environment which is a huge no! 2. What comes in fast tends to leave fast and 3. The trendy pieces can tend to be cheaply made if it is not a designer brand. I do think though that if you like that piece and believe you will like it, especially if the trend dies out, then go for it! Style is about what you like and what you feel comfortable in! You do you, boo boo!

So usually when I get pieces that are more in style, I usually opt for a cheaper price unless I know it is something I will be wearing long term. For this, I usually go to Forever 21 or search Asos and skim over Pretty Little Thing. I also do a lot of outfit searching on Instagram! I know influencers can get annoying and tag all of the places they shop from, but really it is cool to know! I genuinely like to see what else a store has to offer if they tagged a piece that I liked! I usually will go to that store’s page and search for the item as well as similar pieces they may have!

Also, online shopping is a huge blessing! I tend to just google the piece that I am looking for and not only does it usually give you the piece you are looking for, the shopping section usually gives alternatives that are cheaper and pricier so you can pick your poison. For this outfit, I actually copied an influencer I found on Instagram. I fell in love with it and it’s definitely a super trendy outfit!

My Dream Job

It’s life update time! I completed my first week of work at a job I have been wanting for a while! I, of course, am super into fashion and entertainment so naturally, when I heard about PR showrooms I was intrigued. I had not experienced it yet and I think everyone was a little worried when I stopped working at my old PR job in social media and started an internship at a showroom. It was unpaid and I worked at a store at the mall to get by but I knew I needed experience since I had no idea how a showroom functioned at first. Luckily I learned the ropes and was ready to apply for new jobs. I landed an interview at POP PR and after researching the brands they represented I loved it! I was truly blessed to be hired as a fashion assistant and I am excited to see where this journey takes me.

So what is a PR Showroom? I would describe it as a PR management of multiple clothing brands to lend out for celebrity/influencer shoots. It can include gifting, but mostly creates press for the clothes that are shot for magazines, in music videos, and at press events.

As a fashion assistant, so far I have gotten to know the brands, have written a pitch or two, created media lists and assisted in appointments with stylists that come in looking for the perfect outfit for their clients. While I probably cannot name the celebrities we have seen in some of the clothes, let me say there are some A-list names for sure!

This is exactly what I envisioned for myself when I wanted to land my “dream job” a year ago. I never knew this was apart of Public Relations and I am so glad I found it! The people I work with seem very determined and work-driven, but very funny and know how to balance work and play! I am excited to get to know them better and learn so much from them. I will do more updates as more milestones unfold with my job. I am so so excited for my second week of work already!

How My Style Has Evolved

I think as we grow, so does our taste in clothes, along with other aspects of course! I was talking to another blogger recently and I realized that what I post on the blog and Instagram isn’t always pieces that I would wear on a day to day basis. Along with mixing in my favorite statement pieces, I also am going to try to incorporate posts that embody what my regular style is as well. I usually wear my same 501 Levi’s jeans with a (most likely white) v-neck, some simple gold pieces and my hair down. So except for the heels, this outfit is not too much out of my usual look, except for the heels.

I really do think influencers have had a big impact on what I wear! I usually try to limit the trendy pieces because I try to think… will I wear that other than for a shoot? And some pieces I post are just too fun for me to pass up like my star shorts!

When I first started off blogging I have to admit I was aiming to dress like the lifestyle bloggers who constantly shop at Nordstrom and tend to be southern. I quickly realized that while they had cute pieces, they were all so similar! Something amazed me by the bloggers that had an edgier, cooler style with posts that had cool angles and cool pieces. Now I am somewhere in between trying to post outfits like them for cool inspiration, and everyday minimal pieces. While the contrast of the two sucks for my Instagram feed, I feel it is better to be relatable to my audience, but at the same time keep them interested.

No matter what the look may be, my goal is to be different, but also genuine with my style. I have slowly learned more about what I like and do not like and that takes time. I find pieces even now from forever ago that I truly still love, and ones that are cringe-worthy! I would not be caught dead in a lace forever 21 mini dress anymore. But I do love the forever 21 sneakers that I can’t live without!
