Makeup Tips and Crazy Tricks

Can I just start off this post by saying I am not the best at makeup! I definitely have more learning to do and I have two go-to looks: day and night. So because of that, I thought I would share a few things I’ve learned, heard of, and what I have read from YOU through Instagram questions.

Also, just another reminder of how amazing and talented my childhood friends are! My friend Raeann brought in her whole set up to shoot these amazing pictures for me and my best friend Sara did my makeup! It’s a yellow glossy lid that I still cannot get over! If you are in need of a photographer or makeup artist in the SA area, I’ll give you their info!

Makeup Tips :

  • Match your foundation to your overall body tone! Not the color of your face
  • Don’t use foundation powder to set makeup, that’s what setting powder is for and yes there is a difference
  • Contour based on your face shape, not just where most people like to contour
  • Use a green color corrector to cancel out breakouts
  • Lip gloss only lasts about a year before expiring!
  • Use a wet brow brush to clean up lip liner

Crazy Tricks

(These are things I have heard from you all through Instagram stories so I may not try them all… okay for sure one of them and you’ll know which one!)

  • Shave with Olive Oil : it apparently leaves your skin silky smooth when the oil dries
  • Rub a lemon on your underarms, knees, and elbows to reduce darkness
  • If you do not have makeup remover, use cream (unscented is better for no irritation)
  • Wrapping plastic wrap around your waist at night will help you lose water weight in your tummy
  • Use a dry toothbrush to exfoliate your lips
  • Rubbing baby pee on your face reduces pimples.. this is the one to not try

Western Vibes

As a lover of statement pieces, Nasty Gal is one of my go-to places to shop. When I saw this cow printed bikini I knew I had to have it! I am obsessed with the western feel of the swimsuit and knew I had to pair it with my fringe boots. While these rocks aren’t exactly what I had in mind for the background, it worked out. I was traveling from Texas to California and trying to shoot along the way so you can imagine how that turned out when I barely know where everything is packed!

I am currently obsessing over the western trend and I cannot get over how easy it comes to me, probably because I am from Texas. By easy I mean that I do not feel overdressed or in a costume, but in something as basic as a band tee and denim shorts. I think the “trend of the western vibe will fade, but in the south, this is just a genre of clothing we like to wear on a Saturday night to go dancing in!

How do we feel about the swimsuit and boots situation? I have already done a similar look for Coachella weekend but I wanted to keep with the country theme and try it again. I think it was a fun outfit to wear and style and I wish I had been able to have had access to my whole closet and accessories!

12th Tribe

I always want to be upfront and tell the truth about all of the clothing and products that I use and try out. I never want to be one of those bloggers where I accept a product and write a great review because I am getting paid.. tempting of course, but not what I am here for. As an honest review, I love the brand 12th Tribe! I wore pieces to Coachella weekend and when I was able to go to the showroom for a try on I was so excited. Every single piece I tried on I loved! They were all extremely comfortable fabrics but also pieces that were definitely long lasting! I had a great time and their showroom is open for an appointment at their Venice Beach location! So easy to get to after a quick swim!

If you missed my Instagram stories you will definitely want to catch up on my highlights to see how my try on went! I named all of the pieces and these photos will be up on my Instagram asap as well!

This jacket was so cool I seriously want one of my own! Also, I cannot get over this top! It’s a total summer essential. Glasses and hair clips are also all from 12th tribe!

This long sleeve was the perfect flowy wrap top! I layered it with these new necklaces and these Levi’s were so incredibly comfortable! I swear comfort is just apart of the criteria for the pieces in this brand! Totally a laid back, super put together and cool-girl look.

Top : Second Nature // Shorts : Thrasher shorts

I honestly would have never picked out this dress on my own. However, it looked AMAZING on me and was something I could see myself wearing for a weekend brunch! Also, I am obsessed with the shell necklace trend and it truly went perfectly to get those vacation vibes!

This is the perfect everyday outfit! I definitely need these earrings and this cardigan is so versatile!

How to Pose

Let me start off by saying it’s easy to pose when you have an amazing photographer and makeup artist! I got together with a few friends from elementary and middle school and put together this amazing look! If you’re in the San Antonio area I will so give you details for the best photographer and makeup artist! I’m seriously glowing because of all of the makeup and highlight! Also, this was the first shoot I have ever done featuring my little fur baby! I was so excited and did not expect her to be apart of the shoot but she was scared and not comfortable because of all of the lights and unfamiliar faces that she just stuck by my side.

I’ve seen lots of videos on Instagram featuring behind the scenes shots and how they got the end result and I thought it would be a great blog topic. Honestly, the best poses are candids to me. I like to set up a scene, picture what I am about to shoot and just go for it! Practice truly does make perfect!

I’ve met up with a few other bloggers and have seen what they do for posing so I created my own style by seeing them! I, of course, have the go-to poses that I am comfortable with and know what I look like when I do them. I recommend practicing in the mirror first as well! Practice your go-to poses to find your good angles and make it a muscle memory! THEN practice with your outfit on too because if you have a fun skirt you want to twirl in or a purse you want to hold a certain way, that is what can really make a photo! Content creation is key! Being different and confident is what will set you apart from a touristy photo in front of a cute wall.

Lastly, and most importantly, just MOVE! What I like to do is put the camera on shutter mode and walk, twirl, jump, play with my hair and keep moving! Do not move to fast so the camera has time to catch all the movements, but this is the biggest thing I can tell you! A killer photo truly is made by the tiniest details from natural movements.

Lounge Underwear

Blog collabs are always one of my favorite things to do! I am always careful about the collabs I engage with because I try to pick products that I believe in, that my audience will want to know about, will actually try, and will be fun to shoot! Lounge Underwear is no exception! I actually reached out to this amazing brand because I have always wanted one of these types of sets and I knew it would be super comfy and picture perfect! Well, it paid off for sure!

I got the set in the khaki colored triangle thong and matching bra both in a size small and it fit perfectly! Not only were they comfortable, but they were also flattering! Okay, so I know underwear is one of those items that you get for you! You can have cute little hearts or zig zags and you usually do not care because you’re just trying to make it through the week. BUT I think it is so important to have some that you just feel good in! These are so it!

While I was gifted with the ones that have loungewear on them (which I loveeee) there are also pieces that are dainty, colorful, and more! Check them all out HERE!

Scouting out Strangers for a Picture

Have you ever been exploring somewhere new alone, either waiting for a friend or just venturing by yourself when you stumble upon a picture perfect area? So the thought crosses your mind to take a picture! The next thought might be, but who is going to take it? Being mostly alone in California this happens to me a lot so I thought I might add a few of my tips for picking a good person to take a decent picture.

Usually, I want multiple pictures… fine at least 30 to be exact! But I need to be careful about who I choose. Even if you want a group picture these tips will usually help!

  1. Choose a girl : I usually go with a girl about 18-25 because they usually know how to get a good angle, work with the light and usually take multiple. I also ask a group of girls already taking pictures and first offer to take a group picture for them in exchange for one of your own.
  2. Know what you want it to look like beforehand : Scout out the area and I would recommend taking a picture of the area first and tell them “I want it to look like this and I will stand here” and also, “Do you mind taking multiple?”
  3. Set up the camera : Tell them if you just want horizontal or verticle and if you want flash set it up for them so they do not have to mess with the settings!
  4. Foreign Objects : Try to nicely mention not to get cars or people, but mostly you or your outfit

Lastly, keep in mind you can crop and blur some little things out so don’t sweat the small stuff! I keep these pictures pretty raw because I actually did have strangers take them! I wanted to show what it would look like taking my own advice. I also asked two different girls to take these so I could get multiple shots without taking up too much of their time.

Where I Shop

I always get asked about new boutiques and places to shop so I thought I would compile a quick list of places where I get my favorite pieces. I really do shop around everywhere, but depending on the piece I want I will go to different places. If I have a piece in mind, I will go to different places to see if they have something similar, or if it is trendy I have my go-to places! Also if I do not have any idea of what to shoot and just want to try to find a brand new piece I also have my go-to places to shop as well!

I usually like to online shop because the sites I visit most often are not usually found at my local mall. Some of them of course are, but I also just think it’s so much easier! I hardly go to the mall to shop unless I know the store has a piece I really want so I go and see it and try it on in person. I have gotten pretty good at focusing in on materials, reading size dimensions and concluding what will work for me and what will not based on the information provided when I online shop.

I actually got this outfit half online half in person. I was looking for last minute Festival Style pieces and festival or not I am a sucker for fringe. This dress is actually from Forever 21 which is where I go to get my trendy pieces. When I am looking for a piece that is fun and lower cost, or pieces that I really like because they are trendy but I may not wear in a few months, Forever 21 is my go-to! That being said, I would consider this dress a staple dress because it is a LBD and I know I will be wearing it for a while!

Showpo is a great place to shop for cute pieces no matter your size! The pieces always fit well and are girly and fun! Definitely, a must when you are just shopping around for weekend wear!

Verge Girl and Princess Polly seem to be on the same wavelength. I am OBSESSED with their pieces and this is where I shop when I want to shoot something new but I do not have a piece in mind. The pieces are always feminine and sweet and so my style!

The ‘sweet girls’ boutique is none other than Lulu’s of course! This is a must for a sweet Sunday dress or a cute vacation outfit! Also, their shoes and accessories are mostly why I shop here!

When I am looking for something cool and fresh, I shop Asos. The prices range but when you really spend some time on the site there are tons and tons of great finds! For petite friends like me (or even my tall gals) there are subsections for you to shop your size too!

Higher End

Give me all the Lace, Frills and sweet prints brought to you by For Love & Lemons! These pieces are more special occasion pieces but they are so fun and ideal for when I am shooting!

Reformation has great basics and vintage vibes. I found a jacket there once that I just will never be able to live without!

Now I know everyone knows about this one, but for a sleek look, I shop Revolve. You really just need a piece or two to create a killer look, but I mean I would also be elated if my entire closet was made up of Revolve! (What a dream)
